Days 1/2 *Setup *Step forward with RIGHT foot, db ON the ground *Right forefinger on the right side of db *"Fetch" (EC if needed till dog's mouth closes on db,NO help from you at all) *"HOLD" hand under dog's chin, NOT touching or helping, back up * Dog is to go into SSIF. THERE SHOULD BE NO CAGING or touching under the dog's chin at this point. When (not if) the dog drops it (they all do at some point), give the Hold correction, place DB in mouth, command "HOLD" and keep hand under dog's chin in HOLD correction position. DO NOT HELP YOUR DOG MAINTAIN THEIR HOLD - THAT IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY.
Days 3/4 *Setup *Step forward with RIGHT foot, db ON the ground *Right 2 forefingers on the right side of db, approximately 1" away from right side of db *"Fetch" (EC if needed till dog's mouth closes on db,NO help from you at all) *"HOLD" hand under dog's chin, NOT touching or helping, back up * Dog is to go into SSIF. THERE SHOULD BE NO CAGING or touching under the dog's chin at this point. When (not if) the dog drops it (they all do at some point), give the Hold correction, place DB in mouth, command "HOLD" and keep hand under dog's chin in HOLD correction position. Days 5/6 *Setup *Step forward with RIGHT foot, db ON the ground *Right 4 fingers on the right side of db, approximately 3-4" away from right side of db *"Fetch" (EC if needed till dog's mouth closes on db, NO help from you at all) *"HOLD" hand under dog's chin, NOT touching or helping, back up * Dog is to go into SSIF. THERE SHOULD BE NO CAGING or touching under the dog's chin at this point. Follow this process and your dog will, confidently pick up DB as well as HOLD DB, until they are in SSIF and you command, "Give".
* By Days 5/5, after you command "HOLD" and back the dog up into SSIF, the dog SHOULD NOT NEED THE HOLD hand position under their chin. Literally, you can keep your palm under their chin, at least 6" (for taller dogs) and or simply move your hand with them as they move. The point of this sequencing is that the dog begins to grasp the "HOLD" is now included with the "FETCH" command. By Day 6, you absolutely should not NEED a "HOLD" correction if you've been consistent doing this sequencing on Days 1-5.
Tk u Trina. This is the last week we use the HOLD correction in this context. Literally, it is necessary to keep the verbal "HOLD" until your dog is 90% solid that the "Fetch" now has an implied HOLD. That usually takes 5 straight days, doing these retrieves, for the dog to understand.
Lesson 9 DB on the ground review.

No questions! ❤️
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting that. I was jumping ahead just a bit and starting to eliminate the hold command. I will go back to using it until day 5.
