Part 1
When the dog is solid in a Stand, holding it's db as you move about, then go onto this next step.
Please note that IF you aren't in the practice of doing good Stands with your dog, this may be an issue.
You want to make sure you leave your dog in a correct for their body type Stand,
BEFORE,
1) you stand up tall and straight, facing in the same direction as your dog is facing
2) the leash is already in the Walking Position (you will need the loop below your left knee)
3) then command "HOLD" (the presentation of the HOLD during Part 3 is from the right side of the dog so this is different than the presentation of the HOLD during Part 1/2
4) again stand up tall and straight
5) say nothing, nada, zip, zero, zilch, no sounds AT all, NOR are you to tug on the leash
6) take 1 step, 1 step only forward with the left foot and immediately reach for the dogs mouth
7) command "Give" while the dog is moving (NOT in a Sit, they must be on all 4 legs moving)
8) then take a couple of more steps as you verbally praise and come to a Halt.
Each time you do this seek to take another step or two.
*REMEMBER, the HOLD training is done separately from the retrieve training right now.*

Once your dog is confident moving with its db from a Stand, then expand the moving and start practicing going UP/DOWN stairs with your dog holding DB in its mouth.

There is a great deal of history in these videos and instructions. You will note that in MD, I did NOT teach the FC Stand Circles as part of the "HOLD" Part 111. I added that piece when I got here to Utah and found it greatly helps a learning dog grasp the "Hold" concept easier and faster than how I used to teach it. Still, there are valuable concepts and education to learn from these old videos.
ReplyDeleteBTW, the young man is Leon, Alex's son and his dog, Ren, is Boaz's cousin. Leon was 13 when he went to Minnesota with Alex to do PATT on a litter. Leon did ALL the Mannerly Puppy raising, education and training with Ren, he then did ALL the FOUNDATION Course with Ren and here he is doing ALL the Retrieve Course work with Ren. Leon did a splendid job with Ren. She is a phenomenal dog and has been his steady companion all these years.
