Lesson 1: Step stool, wooden dowel, Koehler Open Book
- 1) A step stool, stable (able to have your dog jump "Hup" and "Place" on), with a non-skid surface.
2) What you need for the first class is a puppy canvas bumper or a new paint roller. Doesn't matter if the paint roller is thin or thick.
3) You will need 2-3 white bumpers that have a notch in the center.
Example: the Airflow bumpers (always use white with a learning dog).
Also, you may want to purchase the Avery Perfect Hold Hexagon bumper, Link to purchase at GunDogSupply.
I will be demo'ing the use of BOTH these bumpers for the retrieve training for my 10-month old, Redd.
4) The Koehler Method of Dog Training Open Obedience
1) *Training Table is optional*, but mighty handy (you need an elevated surface, safe for your dog to work on and a surface your dog can move forward on)
Materials and building dimensions.
You will need an 8' table to work on.Best design is a simple 22" wide by 96" long by 20" tall table.
The top is made of one sheet of 5/8" ACX plywood that is ripped at 22", then glued and nailed together. This will give you a 1-1/4" x 24" x 96" top. The leg assembly is made of 4x4 pressure treated, cut at 18-3/4" each, and three 2 x 4 x 96" that you will use to frame the top (two inches inside the profile of the top) and for bracing.

I don't have my rings attached yet to this training table, but recommend you get 2 and put in the center of each end as tie-downs.
Give training table a good coat of exterior paint, and you are good to go for the next 20 years. Total cost - less than $ 100.
3) Hula Hoops: 2-4
4) Stuffed animal, one with ears like your dog, preferably in a Sit or Stand position. Don't spend a lot of money on this stuffed animal (doesn't have to be a dog), just find a stuffed animal with ears like your dog that is preferably in a Sit or Stand position.

The below photo's are an easy homemade (and cheap) version of the Broad Jump and High Jump. Many thanks to Yuliya for sharing these instructions with the 1st Retrieve Class I took with Sugar at the beginning of last summer, 2010. I still use the Broad Jump as it's lightweight and easy to set up, take down & store.
