Fetch Retrieve Course Summer 2024 Curriculum

8-17-2024 Lesson 7 EXAM(s). Student Kellie/Piper

Here are our 6 fetches at high distraction with no ear corrections.  We were located on top of the stop blocks by the propane tank at the Silver Eagle fuel station in Elsinore.  Definitely high distraction.

They are still not perfectly precise.  In review I can see that my set up could be straighter, the dumbbell straighter in front of her, and I need to stop saying the H word, even while caging her mouth.  She is definitely not enjoying hanging on to the dumbbell and I am trying to encourage it even while breaking protocol.  If I need to redo the test, please let me know and we'll try going to town this evening after I get off work.

I was not having this gripping reluctance with her on the wrapped dowel and am beginning to think her primary aversion to the exercise is the material.  Question... can I wrap the dumbbell with duct tape to change the texture or would that be considered cheating?

  1. Kellie,

HUM..what do I need to do to help you NOT ADD EXTRA commands????? What do I need to do to help you understand the dog MUST come back into a SSIF with the caged db (no extra tape on the bit, just the normal wood bit)?

By adding the "HOLD" to the "Fetch" last week AND this week, you have undermined the Lesson 7 Part III Lesson, the "HOLD" from a Stand. So, this is a Pass, but you can do WAY BETTER and will have the Lesson 8 timeframe to improve doing cleaner, crisper mechanics with no added verbiage at all.

The jumps ARE PHENONEMAL and I'm not seeing Piper go into Prey Drive, she's just enjoying the sheer exuberance of being healthy enough to "Jump", "Jump", "Jump", "Jump". The dogs LOVE TO "Jump" and Piper is loving it as it's obvious from her body as she moves and jumps.

Great work on the distractions!! See you in the morning.
