This was today's RC Lesson 8 after HHPR with Redd as my Demo Dog. Again, the first step is putting the dog in a Stand, "HOLD" and then 3 Stand circles just like you did your FC Stand Circles.
DO remember the "HOLD" at this point is put into the dog's mouth when dog is in a Stand and also removed "GIVE" at this point when the dog is still in a Stand. Once the dog can do 1 step, then do 2 steps, then 3 steps, etc. The point is for the dog to understand it CAN move with the DB in its mouth.
DO remember once the "HOLD" command is issued, NO OTHER COMMAND IS SPOKEN. Dog is responsible to 'read your feet' and to heel without any spoken commands. A note here is that your 'J' loop will need to be lower than where is normally is as it can tap the db and a learning dog will drop it AND sigh you have to correct when actually the drop was your fault because of your leash position.
Give your dog EVERY opportunity to succeed without many "HOLD" corrections (because we want to cease those as quickly as we can) and set your dog up for success. DO NOT DO MORE THAN 3 "HOLD" CORRECTIONS IN A SINGLE TRAINING SESSION. WHY? Because doing MORE applied punishment is not going to help your dog understand what it needs to do to avoid the applied punisher.
Instead, build muscle memory, confidence and skill set THIS WEEK as "Less done well is far, FAR better than more done poorly." If it takes your dog more than a week to grasp this concept, so be it. DO NOT OVERUSE THE "HOLD" CORRECTION or you dog may quit trying to understand. Work the dog in front of you as it takes patience, endless patience, very clean mechanics and more patience to set your dog up to succeed. That mindset of CCC and PIC are the signs of a good handler.
